How the punctuation and spacing fixer works

Paste a sample into the fixer and choose the smallest change that matches your task. Fix Spaces adds a space after common punctuation and collapses repeated spaces. Fix Punctuation reduces repeated marks such as commas, question marks, and exclamation points. Fix Everything runs both operations.

Automatic formatting can change intentional line breaks, quotations, or repeated punctuation. Compare the output with the original before copying it into a document.

What each button actually does

The three buttons do not split one job three ways. Two of them handle whitespace and one handles punctuation, and Fix Everything runs both in that order. Knowing which is which saves a second pass.

Fix Spaces

  • Opens up a word that has been typed or pasted hard against its punctuation, so hello,world becomes hello, world.
  • Collapses any run of spaces or tabs down to a single space.
  • Collapses stacked blank lines down to one blank line, so a paragraph break survives.

Fix Punctuation

  • Collapses a repeated mark down to one, so really??? becomes really? and yes,,, becomes yes,. The same applies to straight quotes, apostrophes and forward slashes.
  • Leaves a run of exactly three dots as an ellipsis. Any other run of two or more becomes a single period, which is worth knowing before you rely on it.

Fix Everything

Both of the above, whitespace first. Use this when you are unsure which problem you have, which is usual for text that came out of a PDF or an email chain.

A worked example

Pasted from a PDF, you might have Total , due March 3rd.The discount applies,,, to orders over £50. Fix Everything turns that into Total, due March 3rd. The discount applies, to orders over £50 — the stray space before the comma gone, the run of spaces collapsed, the missing space after the full stop restored, and the tripled comma reduced to one.

What it will not do, and when that matters

  • It does not correct spelling, grammar, or agreement. It only tidies the characters between words.
  • It cannot tell an abbreviation from a mistake. In etc. The next part it is right to capitalise after the full stop, but in approx. 5 units the space it removes may have been deliberate.
  • It will damage anything where spacing carries meaning: tables, ASCII diagrams, code, poetry, and text aligned in columns. Run it on a copy, and read the result before you use it.
  • It always applies a comma-space, which is not universal. Some house styles and some languages set a narrow space after a comma, or none at all.

Copying the result

The copy button uses the modern clipboard where the browser allows it. On a page served over plain HTTP it falls back to selecting the text and asking the browser to copy it, which is why the button still works but may need a second press. Either way the text goes to your own clipboard and is not sent anywhere.
