Case Converter guide

Change the capitalization of a draft without rewriting its words. Uppercase, lowercase, title case, and sentence case can make headings, labels, and lists easier to compare.

Choosing a format

• Use uppercase for short labels or headings where readability permits.
• Use lowercase for tags, commands, and compact interface text.
• Use title case for many headings.
• Use sentence case for ordinary prose and instructions.

Capitalization tools do not correct grammar, punctuation, or the style guide required by a particular publisher. Review the final text in context.

How the four modes work

Each mode rewrites the whole box. None of them is a search-and-replace, so there is nothing to undo one change at a time — keep the original somewhere else if you need it.

• UPPERCASE and lowercase are direct and predictable.
• Title Case lowercases everything first, then capitalises the first letter of every word. That includes short words, so a heading becomes The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog, with Over and The capitalised. Many house styles want those left small; this tool cannot tell, so it does not try.
• Sentence case lowercases everything, then capitalises the opening word and the first word after a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.

Read this before you use it on anything technical

Because every mode lowercases the text before it re-capitalises it, acronyms and brand names are destroyed. NASA becomes Nasa, PDF becomes Pdf, and iPhone becomes Iphone. The same applies to camelCase, snake_case, file paths, environment variables, and any identifier. Convert prose, and leave code and identifiers alone.

Sentence case also capitalises after any full stop, including one that is not a sentence break. In see fig. 4 for detail it will produce See Fig. 4 For Detail. That is correct for a sentence and wrong for a figure reference, and the tool has no way to tell the difference.

Choosing between title case and sentence case

Sentence case suits instructions, UI labels and body prose, and reads more comfortably at length. Title case suits short headings, menu items and list labels, where capitalising every word reinforces the shape. If a publisher or a style guide has told you which one to use, follow that instead of this page.

The counters

The word and character counts under the box update as you type. They count the text currently in the box, which after a conversion is the converted text, not the original. Character count includes spaces and line breaks.

What this tool does not do

It changes capitalisation and nothing else. It does not fix grammar, punctuation or spelling, it does not know your preferred style guide, and it cannot tell an acronym from a typo. Convert first, then read the result in the place it is going, because that is the only way to catch the cases above.
